Scoring Rules

RoundBoss supports multiple scoring formats and every point value is configurable. This page describes the default match play scoring system. Managers can adjust all values from the Scoring Configuration settings.

Two players share one ball and alternate shots. One team score per hole.

Match Play Points

Each week, two players are paired for a head-to-head 9-hole match. After handicap strokes are applied, every hole is scored independently:

  • Win the hole (lower adjusted score) -- points awarded (default: 1)
  • Push (tied adjusted score) -- points split (default: 0.5 each)
  • Lose the hole -- 0 points

After all 9 holes, the player with the lower adjusted total receives a bonus (default: 3 points). If totals are tied, the bonus is split evenly between them.

All of these values -- hole win, push, bonus, and the per-match cap -- are set by the league manager in Settings.

Handicap and Strokes

Handicaps are based on a rolling average of each player's recent gross scores. The rolling window is state-based — it counts the last N results the player has actually played (default 5), not calendar weeks. The league manager configures the window size.

When two players are matched, the stroke difference is:

strokes = floor((higher_avg - lower_avg) * multiplier)

The multiplier (default: 0.9) is configurable. Strokes are applied to the hardest-rated holes on the course. On those holes, the receiving player's score is reduced by one before comparison. New players without enough history use all available scores.

info
A player's average for a past week is the average they carried into that week — it doesn't change as later rounds are played. Makeup rounds are scored against that at-the-time average (the snapshot frozen when the week locked), not the current average. See Handicap and Strokes.

See Handicap and Strokes for the full breakdown and a worked example.

Play the Card

When a player's opponent misses a week, the present player earns points by comparing their adjusted scores hole by hole against the course card (a preset target score per hole). Points are calculated the same way as a regular match. See Play the Card for details.

Makeup Rounds

The player who missed a week receives the league's flat miss points (default 0) and enters a makeup queue. The next time they play, their scores are compared against the card for a makeup round with a reduced point cap (default: 9). Both are limited by max misses per season (default 4): the first 4 misses earn miss points and a makeup; the 5th and later earn 0 and no makeup. Leagues can instead enable Use average for misses, scoring the present player against the absent player's rolling average (absent player gets 0). See Makeup Rounds for details.

Point Caps

Each source of points -- regular match, Play the Card, and makeup rounds -- is subject to its own configurable per-match cap.

Team Match Play Scoring

In Team Match Play leagues, individual matches use the same hole-by-hole scoring described above. The team score for each week is the sum of all member match points, plus an optional sweep bonus.

A sweep occurs when every player on one team wins their individual match. The sweep bonus (default: 3 points) is awarded to the winning team. If both teams win at least one match, no sweep bonus is awarded.

See the Team Match Play page for full details.

Fun Weeks

Managers can designate any week as a fun week -- a week played with a non-standard format (e.g. scramble, 3-club challenge, alternate shot). Fun weeks use the same scoring engine as regular weeks.

info
By default, fun week points count toward the season leaderboard. You can turn off Fun Weeks Count Toward Standings in Settings to keep fun weeks separate. Players can still see their fun week results on the schedule page.
