Matchups

Set Up a Match Play Golf League | RoundBoss Watch on YouTube (opens in a new tab)

RoundBoss generates head-to-head pairings for each week of your league season.

Matchup Modes

Choose how players are paired each week:

Random (No Repeat)

Players are paired randomly, but RoundBoss avoids repeating the same matchup until all possible pairings have been used.

Skill-Based

Players are matched against opponents with similar averages for more competitive rounds.

Social Mixer

Prioritizes variety so players meet as many different opponents as possible.

Manual

You choose every pairing yourself.

Generating Matchups

1
Navigate to the current week

Use the week navigator dropdown to select the week you want to generate matchups for.

2
Generate the matchups

Open the week’s ⋮ menu and choose Generate matchups (or use Generate All Matchups at the top of the Weeks list to do every week at once). RoundBoss will create pairings based on your selected mode. If your league has an odd number of players, one player will receive a bye. Stroke play and Stableford leagues have no matchups: the same menu says Add players to this week and gives every golfer their own spot, so nobody gets a bye.

3
Review and adjust

After matchups are generated, you can manually swap players between matches or reassign pairings. Click the edit icon on any matchup to make changes before scores are entered.

Substitutes (Replace Player with Sub)

Every 1v1 matchup has a Settings button (the tune/gear icon) that opens Match Settings for that match. From there, under Replace Player with Sub:

1
Pick the player to replace
Choose either player in the matchup from the Player to Replace dropdown.
2
Pick the substitute
Choose a Substitute Player from anyone else already in the league’s player directory (not already in this match).
3
Confirm the swap
Click Replace <name> with sub. The match now shows the substitute in place of the original player for this week only — future weeks' matchups are unaffected.
The swap is only available before scores are submitted for that match. Once a match is submitted, the Replace Player with Sub control is disabled (the match shows "Player swap is disabled after scores are submitted") — unsubmit the match first if you need to swap after the fact.

Swapping records the match as a substitute round: it sets is_substitute and remembers which original player was replaced. This is the same is_substitute flag referenced in Handicap and Strokes — a round flagged as a substitute round is excluded from the team rolling average for team formats, and the match itself still scores normally for the substitute player who actually played.

Match Settings also has two more controls that work independently of a swap:

  • Handicap Overrides — set a manual handicap for either player on this one match (leave blank for the normal calculated value).
  • Exclude from Handicap Calc — mark the round so it never affects either player’s future rolling average, without removing it from the match or the leaderboard.
Team formats (Scramble, Best Ball, Alternate Shot) manage substitutes per team round instead, with their own Has Substitute flag on the team’s Settings for that week — see Handicap and Strokes for how substitute rounds are handled in team handicap calculations.

Team Match Play Matchups

In Team Match Play leagues, matchup generation works in two steps:

  1. Team pairings — Teams are paired against each other using the selected matchup mode (random, skill-based, etc.).
  2. Individual pairings — Within each team matchup, players are paired by handicap position (best vs. best, second vs. second, etc.).

After generation, managers can reassign individual 1v1 pairings within a team matchup without changing the team pairing itself.

Use the week navigator dropdown to jump to any week in the season. Each week shows its matchup pairings, scores (if entered), and the course being played.
