Marker Validation

Marker validation adds a score attestation step where a player's opponent reviews and confirms submitted scores before they are considered final. This mirrors the real-world practice of having a playing partner (marker) sign your scorecard.

info
Marker validation is optional. If you do not turn it on, scores are counted as final the moment they are submitted.

How It Works

When marker validation is enabled for a league:

1
Player submits scores

A player submits scores for their match through the player portal.

2
Opponent is assigned as marker

The opponent receives a push notification asking them to review the scores.

3
Marker approves or disputes

The marker reviews and approves or disputes the scores from their player portal.

4
Auto-approval fallback

If no action is taken within the grace period, scores are auto-approved.

Enabling Marker Validation

Managers enable this feature from the league Settings tab. Two settings control the behavior:

SettingDefaultDescription
Marker Validation EnabledOffTurn on to require score attestation by the opponent.
Grace Period (hours)24How long the marker has to review scores before auto-approval. Configurable from 1 to 168 hours (1 week).

Validation Flow

Score Submission

When a player submits scores for a match and both players are present (neither marked as missed), the system automatically:

  • Sets the opponent as the marker for the match
  • Changes the match validation status to pending
  • Sends a push notification to the marker: "Score Confirmation Needed — [Player] submitted scores for Week N. Please review and confirm."
info
If either player missed the round, there is no marker step -- scores are counted right away.

Team Format Support (Best Ball, Scramble, Alternate Shot)

Marker validation also applies to team formats. When a Best Ball, Scramble, or Alternate Shot round is submitted:

  • The marker is auto-picked from the opposing team in that week's matchup. The first non-absent member is selected (deterministic by team-member ID).
  • Best Ball rounds set the marker on the BestBallRound; Scramble and Alternate Shot set it on the TeamRound.
  • The team round goes into Pending state and a push notification is sent to the marker.
  • Manager Best Ball and Scramble cards show an hourglass badge while pending and a flag badge if disputed -- same convention as individual matches.
  • The marker's pending list shows BB rounds, team rounds, and individual matches together (each row is labelled with its kind).
  • If there is no opposing team, or every opposing player is absent, validation is silently skipped for that team's round (no marker is assignable).
  • Whole-team-missed rounds skip validation entirely (no scores to attest).

Marker Review

The marker sees pending validations in their player portal under the Pending Validation section. For each match awaiting review they can see:

  • Week number and date
  • Both players' names and total scores
  • When the scores were submitted

The marker has two options:

  • Approve — Confirms the scores are correct. The match status changes to "approved."
  • Dispute — Flags the scores for manager review. The marker can include an optional note explaining the disagreement. The match status changes to "disputed."

Auto-Approval

If the marker does not take action within the configured grace period, the system automatically approves the scores. The match is marked as auto-approved with a note indicating the grace period elapsed.

Auto-approval runs on a scheduled basis and checks all leagues with marker validation enabled.

Validation Statuses

StatusMeaning
Not applicableMarker validation is not enabled or does not apply to this match.
PendingScores submitted, waiting for the marker to review.
ApprovedThe marker confirmed the scores are correct.
DisputedThe marker flagged the scores as incorrect. Manager should review.
Auto-approvedThe grace period elapsed without marker action. Scores accepted automatically.

Manager Role

Managers can always view the validation status of any match. When a match is disputed:

  1. Review the marker's note to understand the disagreement.
  2. Edit the scores if a correction is needed (see Entering Scores).
  3. Manager-submitted scores are finalized immediately and do not go through the marker validation flow.
warning
Disputed scores need manager attention. When a dispute is filed, neither player can resolve it -- the manager must review and edit scores if needed.

Scores entered directly by managers or co-managers bypass marker validation entirely. Only player-submitted scores trigger the validation flow.

Player Experience

Players see validation status on their match detail screen. Both the submitting player and the marker can check:

  • Who the assigned marker is
  • The current validation status
  • When validation occurred (if completed)
  • Any note left by the marker

Tips

lightbulb
Set the grace period based on your league's pace. If your league plays weekly, 24-48 hours is typical. For more casual leagues, a longer period gives markers more time.
lightbulb
Works with push notifications. Markers receive a push notification so they know to check their portal. Make sure players have installed the PWA and allowed notifications for the best experience.
